Another ancient bridge made across Zayandehrood river in Safavid era in Isfahan city is Khajoo or Khaju bridge. This bridge has been constructed in east side of Si-o-Se Pol or Allahverdi Khan bridge and almost 1800 away from that.

History

At this place there had been an older bridge made in Timurid dynasty named Hasan Beyk of Timurid bridge. So Khajoo bridge is the restored form of Hasan Beyk. This restoration has been done at the behest of Shah Abbas the Second.

Shah Abbas the second considered an alcove as a seat in order to have palace for his short-time residency in the middle of the bridge. The place where is built further front in the center of the bridge. Historians and narrators say that this alcove was dedicated to Shah Abbas the second and his family and also a place to watch boating matches.

Architeture

This bridge as another architectural masterpiece made in Safavid era almost 400 years ago, in addition to crossing the river was being used as place for entertainment and kind of like a playground. Nowadays Tabiat bridge in Tehran has been constructed based on Khajoo bridge of Isfahan’s utilization.

This bridge is 133 meters long, 12 meters wide and 7.5 meters high and is built with brick, stone and Sarooj. In terms of hydraulic and structure this bridge is completely compatible with the environment in a way that performs as a dam for underground water resources.

There is an inscription in southern side of the bridge which indicates that Khahoo bridge of Isfahan has been restored in Qajar dynasty in 1252 SH or 1873 AD.

Names

  • Baba Roknoddin bridge: This bridge was being called because was located near the Baba Roknoddin temple.
  • Shiraz bridge: Khajoo bridge has been constructed near the beginning of the Isfahan to Shiraz Road this is why sometimes this bridge is called Shiraz bridge.
  • GBRA or Gabr: In Persian Gabr means Zoroastrian which is A word to call Zoroastrian people. As Zoroastrian people used this bridge to cross the river more than other people in a period of time this bridge was being called Gabr by the neighbors.
  • Khajoo bridge: “Khajoo” is the name of the neighborhood where the bridge is located. So, this is why the bridge is called Khajoo.
  • Hasanabad: Before “khajoo” the name of the neighborhood used to be “Hasanabad”.
