West mountains which start from northwestern and end in center of Iran are located in cold and mountainous climate. Average of air temperature for hottest months in summer is more than 10o C and for coldest months of the year is less than 3o C. This issue puts this district in cold weather category. Western mountains are obstacles for humid Mediterranean weather to penetrate into central Plateau of Iran.

How are seasons in cold and mountainous climate?

Severe hot weather of cliffs in the summer and moderate temperature in winter are features of this district. Severity of sunshine in cold and mountainous climate is high in summer and low in winter. Weather here in most days of the year is wintry and has long winter during the year and also surface of the earth is covered with ice. All over this climate from Azerbaijan to Fars province winters are so cold weather. Wintry weather here starts from Azar (9th month of Persian calendar) takes long till end of Farvardin (1st month of Persian Calendar). But weather like spring in this climate is too short.

How is rainfall in cold and mountainous climate?

Amount of rainfall in summer is low but in most of the days in winter is snowy. Consecutive snow rainfall causes peak of the mountains to be covered with snow in 3000-meter-altitude. These rainfall in height of the mountains lead to creating source of so many underground waters and Qanats.

What cities are in cold and mountainous climate?

In Iran cities like Tabriz, Orumiyeh, Sanandaj, Hamedan are located in this climate. Mountains like Sahand, Sabalan, Bozghoosh, Arasbaran in East Azerbaijan province and mountains like Chaharcheshme, Koochsar, Sheykh Maaroof, Panje Ali in Kurdistan province and etcetera are the mountains which are located in this climate.
